New test: Lou Box Dress 2 for Sew DIY

As you probably know, I’ve tested garments a few times for Beth from Sew DIY – and was more than glad to test the updated version of the Lou Box Dress 2 for her recently: particularly since it was on my list as a straight-up make before the call for the testers went out!

I first took notice of the pattern when I saw Beth’s own grey version in a thin knit (you can see it on the bundle cover) and thought it looked like an elegant take on a comfy knit dress. So when I decided to make my own, it was a fairly quick process to pick this version and view of the Lou Box Dress 2 – and equally easy to select this thin botanical knit with a  ton of drape. It’s been languishing in my stash for several years now, waiting for the right project, and I think this was a nice match. Continue reading “New test: Lou Box Dress 2 for Sew DIY”

New test: Sew DIY Lela midi skirt

Wow – it seems a little time since I wrote about a test garment. I haven’t made millions, but I went through a spate of tests last year at some point and then… not so many. I do like testing, but I think I’ve got to the point now where I really only volunteer if it’s something I genuinely think I will wear. I realise that sounds a little obvious, but I love the challenge of new techniques and shapes as well, so I’m trying to be more practical about taking on such things if the final garment isn’t remotely in my style wheelhouse. I can’t believe I just wrote “style wheelhouse”. Who have I become? Lol.

Alright, anyway, this here skirt was definitely in my wheelhouse. I’m always keeping my eyes open for patterns that are quite basic in some ways, but with a few little details that make me want to make them in every colour. I’d seen the Lela Skirt in its original version – the Baseball Skirt – but it was the new midi version that Beth has added to the original pattern that really clicked with me as a shape I lacked in my wardrobe. I also immediately envisioned a knit version, even though the pattern is intended for wovens, and have started sewing one up. Stay tuned for that update! New test: Ali sweatshirt for Sew DIY

Beth from Sew DIY released her Ali sweatshirt today, which I had fun testing back in July with a team of other lovely sewists. It was great seeing the different versions everyone came up with!

I’ve tested a few different patterns for a few different designers now, and the usual criteria for me is (assuming I get picked to test in the first place): is it something I was thinking about sewing anyway and/or is it something that excites me? The Ali sweatshirt is the sort of garment that does get me excited: I love an oversized sweater, I love a drop shoulder element and I have TONS of knits that were perfect for this project.
