Hey June Handmade Halifax Hoodie for #sewmystyle August

I got the date completely wrong for this one again and thought I had another week to make it, when in actual fact the reveal date was last Sunday. If it had been any other pattern I would just have skipped it, but I actually really need a new hoodie, since my beloved grey Nike hoodie bit the dust a couple of months ago.

There are an absolute ton of different options for the Hey June Handmade Halifax hoodie and you can see all sorts of interesting versions if you do a quick search, from a sweater with interesting design lines, to a cowl neck zippered hoodie. I knew that I wanted a traditional front-zippered, hooded-hoodie and this is View C from the pattern. It’s the most time-intensive, but even this version didn’t take very long at all – half a day at most. Continue reading “Hey June Handmade Halifax Hoodie for #sewmystyle August”

New robes: Helen’s Closet Suki kimono robes for #sewmystyle June

June has been a funny old month for sewing. I feel like I might have said that already in another post. I’ve had a few slightly frustrating sews, where I haven’t quite finished the project or the garment didn’t quite fit right. All par for the course for sewing, but a little unsatisfying. I’ve also given myself a fair bit to do with various challenges and decisions. I enjoy these and they’re completely voluntary of course (so I only have myself to blame), but I have hit a little bottleneck recently.

New shirt: Kalle cropped shirt for #sewmystyle March in not-ombre

SONY DSC

Hi again folks – another cool pattern that I’ve been meaning to try for ages is featured in #sewmystyle2018 this month. Now, I’ll admit that the Closet Case Patterns Kalle shirt/shirtdress was a slow burner for me. The first iterations I saw were of the longest dress version and that particular view is a style that doesn’t do much for my shape. However, once the other versions started appearing, and particularly when I spied the chambray tunic version on Heather’s website, I started to come around. New coat: BHL Rumana coat for #sewmystyle2018

20180228_171416I thought long and hard about this one. I have a coat in mothballs that needs to be finished (Butterick 6385) for starters. Secondly, my body is changing as a result of my recent athletic endeavours. Did I really want to put the time, effort and money into a winter coat I might not get much wear out of? Not really, was the answer. Then I noticed that linen was a potential recommended fabric for the By Hand London Rumana coat, which was this month’s #sewmystyle2018 featured pattern. I happened to have a 4yd length of mid-blue linen/canvas that I had been wondering what to do with, it being a little too stiff for the original trousers I had in mind. Hmmm. And there it was. An experimental spring coat in linen/canvas. Continue reading “New coat: BHL Rumana coat for #sewmystyle2018”

New dress: Sunny dress for #sewmystyle January!

It feels a little odd to be making a summery dress in January, but it’s actually quite a pleasant experience. It’s a bit like walking past a patio heater at a Christmas party – if you close your eyes you can almost believe it’s the middle of June. Although don’t close your eyes while sewing a dress. That’s definitely not advisable.

The Sunny dress from Friday Pattern Company is the first pattern for #sewmystyle2018 and is a fast and simple make, with lots of opportunity for customising. I was excited to make this for two reasons: 1) I’ve been itching to make a t-shirt dress for ages, even though I suspected it wouldn’t suit my midriff too well (I was right – ah well) and 2) I’ve been wanting to try a Friday Pattern Company design for quite some time as well and it was a good little test. They have some really great patterns in their repertoire, possibly aimed at the slightly younger market, and this has given me some warm and fuzzy feelings about trying some of the others.  Continue reading “New dress: Sunny dress for #sewmystyle January!”
